Open Forum: A stronger power grid matters to Valley families
Like many working moms, I spend most days juggling a lot. I've been working full time in compliance for a housing company. I also have a family, a home and a busy schedule to manage.
Some days, just getting everyone where they need to be feels like a win.
That is one reason I think a lot about the things we count on every day. Electricity is one of them. Most of us do not think about the power grid when we flip on a light or plug in our phone. We just expect it to work. But reliable power matters.
Families need it to cook dinner, wash clothes, do homework and keep their homes comfortable. Businesses need it to serve customers and keep people working. Farmers need it to run their operations. Our schools, hospitals and other important services depend on it too.
And the Shenandoah Valley is growing. More people are moving to our region. We are seeing new business and manufacturing opportunities. Agriculture remains an important part of our economy, and tourism continues to bring people to the Valley. All of that growth means we need a power grid that can grow with us.
That is why I support the proposed merger of Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy. For me, this is not just about two companies joining together. It is about making sure Virginia has the resources it needs to provide reliable power as our communities grow.
NextEra Energy would bring more resources and experience to Dominion Energy. That could help Virginia invest in power lines, power generation and other improvements needed to make our electric system stronger. It could also help when severe weather hits.
NextEra Energy operates in Florida, where hurricanes and major storms are a fact of life. The company has a great deal of experience preparing for storms and restoring power afterward. Bringing that experience and added resources to Virginia could help us prepare for bad weather and get the power back on faster when outages happen.
Ialso think it is important that we keep a strong local connection. Under the proposal, Richmond would remain a headquarters, and Dominion Energy Virginia would continue to be locally led. The Virginia State Corporation Commission would also continue to oversee the utility. That matters to me. We can gain the resources of a larger company without giving up Virginia leadership and oversight.
Cost matters too. I see that in my work in housing, and I see it at my own kitchen table. Families are paying more for groceries, housing and many other everyday needs. Every household expense matters.
The merger includes $2.25 billion in bill credits for Dominion Energy customers in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina over two years. That would provide some immediate help. But there could be benefits beyond those credits.
Alarger company may be able to buy equipment and supplies at better prices. It may be able to build projects more efficiently and borrow money at lower costs. Those savings could help control the cost of improving our power system over time.
That does not mean anyone can promise that electric bills will go down. Our region is growing, and building the power system we need will cost money. The goal should be to make those investments wisely and keep costs as reasonable as possible.
As a working mom, I think about the future a lot. I want our children to have good jobs and opportunities here. I want businesses to grow. I want our farmers and small businesses to succeed. And I want families to know they can count on the basic services they need every day.
To do all of that, the Valley needs reliable power and a strong electric grid. If this merger gives Virginia more resources and experience to build that stronger system while keeping local leadership and Virginia oversight, I believe it is worth supporting.
