At a time when massive spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure has increased selectivity in debt markets, rocket and satellite internet company SpaceX sat down at the table for hardware investments. Investment manager Apollo Global Management shared on October 26 an equipment financing commitment of approximately $40 billion to purchase and lease graphics processing units (GPUs) and hardware on the company's behalf.

How will SpaceX finance its chip infrastructure?

The binding lease agreement, targeted for completion by the end of the year, represents the sector's largest committed GPU financing. Under this model, which will proceed in separate hardware tranches, Apollo will lease the chips it purchases to SpaceX, with total principal repayments reaching approximately $40 billion. The company's chief executive officer, Elon Musk, said the debt is structured to largely allow for prepayment before maturity. While chip deliveries are expected to take place in the first 2 quarters of 2027, the impact on the current quarter's balance sheet will remain limited.

What dangers await cloud providers?

Touching on borrowing capacity, Musk said SpaceX's investment-grade credit rating along with revenues from Starlink and rocket launches secured this funding. Musk predicted that more than 200 private cloud providers focused solely on artificial intelligence data centers, known as 'neoclouds', will face a wave of bankruptcies and mergers due to bottlenecks in debt markets. Agreeing with warnings from investor Chamath Palihapitiya regarding construction delays and idle capacity in 2027, Musk argued that companies without external revenue will not survive.

As the search for capital in artificial intelligence infrastructure continues, data center developer Stack Infrastructure also sought a $6 billion loan this month for its Melbourne facility. On the SpaceX side, capital expenditures stood at $19.6 billion in the 3rd quarter of 2026. Chief Financial Officer Bret Johnsen calculated that 4th quarter spending would rise to between $35 billion and $40 billion due to increasing processing capacity needs. The company expanded its software arm in August by acquiring coding platform Cursor for $60 billion.

For its long-term chip needs, SpaceX is carrying out a semiconductor manufacturing project called Terafab in partnership with Tesla. Musk plans to produce the first test chip at the research facility in Austin in May or June 2027. While the transition to mass production at the Gibbons Creek site in Grimes County, Texas is targeted for the 2nd half of 2028, Musk believes most of Tesla's future value will come from the Optimus robot and Cybercab projects.
