Ovintiv Expands Acreage with $890 Million Acquisition
Ovintiv has agreed to acquire Canada-based Logan Energy in a deal valued at approximately $890 million, including debt. Agreed at 1.40 Canadian dollars in cash per share, the transaction will significantly expand the US energy producer's operational presence in Canada's oil-rich Montney formation.
How will the acquisition in the Montney field impact production?
Under the agreement, 420 net well locations at a 10 thousand-foot equivalent and 266 thousand net acres of land in the Montney oil field will be added to the company's portfolio. This will bring Ovintiv's core acreage in the region to approximately 720 thousand net acres. Current production from the acquired assets totals approximately 20 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day, comprising daily output of 7 thousand barrels of oil and condensate, 70 thousand Mcf of natural gas, and 1,000 barrels of other natural gas liquids.
What will be the impact of the deal on cash flow and shareholder returns?
Maintaining its shareholder return commitments, company management will continue to distribute at least 60% of 2026 free cash flow to shareholders through share buybacks and regular dividend payments. This return target is maintained in the range of 50% to 100% after 2026. The acquisition is projected to increase Ovintiv's cash flow per share by 5% and free cash flow per share by 3% in fiscal year 2027.
News of the deal drove gains in shares of both companies in the market. Traded on the New York Stock Exchange, Ovintiv shares reached $72.27 to end the day with a 4.29% gain, while acquisition target Logan Energy shares rose 10.27% to $1.02.
