Meta Takes on YouTube with 90-Minute Video Platform
Meta Platforms (META) expanded its presence in the entertainment sector with its new platform Features, which allows 90-minute video uploads, entering into direct competition with YouTube and TikTok. Launched on Monday, the platform provides ground for content creators and podcasters to produce long-form videos while also creating a competitive arena with platforms such as Netflix and Disney.
How will the Instagram Features platform work?
Under the system, users will see a short preview clip of videos; they can swipe past if they wish or click the link to watch the full production. Long-form content will also be highlighted in users' Explore tab and other sections of the app through the recommendation algorithm.
How will revenue sharing work for content creators?
In terms of the financial framework for content creators, a direct YouTube-like revenue sharing model will not be implemented in the initial phase. Instagram Vice President of Product Tessa Lyons stated that various bespoke deals are being carried out with early creators, and that creators can retain their existing sponsorship and branded content agreements while also sharing these videos on other platforms.
Introducing the new video format amid cost debates driven by artificial intelligence expenditures and operational investments, the company's shares saw a limited pullback in the market. Following the announcement, Meta Platforms shares ended the day down 0.79% at $637.55.
